The History Of Men’s Football World Cup Since 1930.
In football (soccer), the World Cup is a quadrennial competition between men’s national teams to select the world champion of the sport.Â
With billions of fans watching every tournament on television, it’s probably the most watched sporting event in the world.
Nations from all over the world fiercely fight, often years in advance, to host the lucrative event, and the tournament has long been dogged by allegations of bribery related to the awarding of hosting rights.
More than two dozen FIFA executives and others close to them were involved in a 24-year self-enrichment plan that reached the highest levels of FIFA management, as revealed by the FIFA corruption scandal of 2015.
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) held the cup’s inaugural competition in 1930, which Uruguay won.
Except for World War II, the competition has been held every four years since then.
It starts with international sectional tournaments and culminates in a final elimination round with 32 national teams.
In contrast to Olympic football, World Cup teams are not restricted to amateur status or players of a specific age, so the competition is more akin to a match between the best players in the world.
Referees are chosen from lists that each national association submits.
The Jules Rimet Trophy, so named after the Frenchman who first suggested the competition, was the trophy cup given out between 1930 and 1970.
Brazil, the three-time winner (1958, 1962, and 1970), was given this cup permanently in 1970.
A new trophy known as the FIFA World Cup was then placed up for competition.
“World Cup” events are arranged in numerous other sports.
