Gen Zs Accused by William Ruto of Using Govt-Sponsored Internet to Attack Him: “Kusalimiana”
President William Ruto has accused the country’s youth of using the government-provided internet to launch attacks against him.
On Wednesday, July 31, President William Ruto explained that the government’s initiative to provide free Wi-Fi across Kenya was intended to help youth access employment opportunities and improve their lives.
However, he noted that the youth are using the internet to attack him and other politicians under the pretext of exchanging greetings.
“What’s going on now is that the internet is being used more kusalimiana, sometimes you know you become the architect of your troubles,” he said.
He sarcastically remarked that he and other politicians have received ‘encouraging’ messages from the youth, particularly during protests.
“When we delivered Wi-Fi across Kenya, we intended it to be used for good purposes.
So people can access e-commerce space to work on the internet. But sometimes, is used to send us encouraging messages, “Ruto added.
The audience, who appeared familiar with the ‘kusalimiana’ trend among Kenyan youth online, burst into laughter.
Earlier, a prominent X personality launched an online campaign urging Kenyans to share the contact information of elected leaders.
Kenyans broadly shared the phone numbers of MPs so that citizens could call and urge them to vote against the Finance Bill 2024.
This came as the National Assembly Finance Committee repealed clause 63 of the bill, which exempted the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) from the Data Protection Act.
In response, the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) warned the public against such actions, advising Kenyans to refrain.
ODPC invited any public member whose privacy was infringed upon or violated to file a complaint.
Kenyans criticized the government over its warning against sharing members of parliament’s data online.
