ODM leader Raila Odinga attended the funeral of Mzee Chirchir Masit in Chepkorio.
The deceased was the father of Irene Masit, one of the four IEBC commissioners who opposed the 2022 presidential election results.
Footage shows that upon Raila’s arrival, he was warmly welcomed by various leaders, who also provided tight security.
“Baba, we are very grateful you visited us today at this funeral. We thank God for you, our grandfather. We feel appreciated that you have come.
Welcome any other day when we have different activities. You can visit our school and take something for remembrance,” said the host school principal.
They guided him to sign the condolence book, with some locals calling out his name and inviting him to the event. After signing, Raila was greeted by standing attendees as he made his way to his seat.
Notable figures present included Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, Elgeyo Marakwet governor Wisley Rotich, and several other political leaders.
Sudi took the opportunity to reveal his longstanding relationship with Raila Odinga, stating that they have been friends for over a decade. He noted that their only disagreements arise during voting periods.
“Raila Odinga is my friend of over 17 years. He doesn’t even call me Sudi but calls me Kijana Yangu (My son). We are close and our only difference is in voting. However, after every election, I am among the first people to call him,” he said.
In the meantime, Raila and President William Ruto established a comprehensive government that incorporated four ODM leaders as Cabinet secretaries.
In other news, Raila disclosed to the mourners how they reached an agreement leading to the forming of a broad-based government.
According to the former prime minister, ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta reached out to him. He requested that he talk to Ruto as the country was ‘burning’. Before he could do that, the president reached out to him and he pointed to him areas where problems arose and they both discussed the way forward.
