Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo claimed on Thursday that President William Ruto will be in serious trouble if Raila Odinga does not win the African Union Commission (AUC) seat, given the amount of state resources invested in the campaign.

Speaking on local television, the senator argued that the state, based on its investment in the bid, has been counting its chicks before they hatch because, in his opinion, it is too early to predict whether Raila will win.

The senator then poked holes in President Ruto’s development tour of the Nyanza region, which began on Wednesday.

The senator questioned whether this was prudent, given that residents of the region will expect the former Prime Minister to win.

“President Ruto has quickly rushed to Nyanza but will be in a lot of trouble if Raila doesn’t get the bid,” Maanzo said.

President William Ruto began his four-day tour of Nyanza on Wednesday, just one day after officially launching Raila’s bid for the AUC at State House.

During the tour, Ruto will inspect the Lower Kuja Irrigation Project and inaugurate the Ngere-Mapera Road.

On the first day of his visit, Ruto was accompanied by several regional leaders and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

Raila Odinga has so far received support from Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir.

Burundi Rwanda and Nigeria have also declared their support for Raila.

Raila wants to succeed Chad’s Moussa Faki, whose term ends early next year.

During his candidacy launch at State House, Raila promised to make the AU a people-centered organization and to collaborate with all heads of state to achieve this goal.

” I will utilize the transition period if elected to critically analyze the existing proposals for reforms and building capacity of the AU Commission.”

While acknowledging Africa’s ongoing challenges, Raila pledged to lead a united Africa rather than one divided by region.

During the launch of Raila’s candidacy, President Ruto expressed confidence in Raila’s ability to win and even outperform.

The ball is now in Raila’s court, as he is expected to begin the most important part of the process, reaching out to other African countries to support his bid.
