Hillside Endarasha Academy has made headlines over a tragic fire accident that claimed the lives of over 20 pupils.

The private primary school was established 15 years ago in Nyeri county.

Kinyua and his family live near the institution.

Citizen TV reported that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DC) questioned Kinyua about the alleged electric fault that started the fire.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the total number of schools rose by 4.9% to 93,988 in 2023 from 89,615 in 2022.

During the period under review, enrolment in pre-primary schools increased by 2% to 2.88 million.

Enrolment for both boys and girls increased by 1.2 and 2.7% respectively.

However, enrolment in primary schools decreased marginally from 10.36 million to 10.24 million in 2023.

The nation remained in shock and confusion as over 40 children were still unaccounted for days after a devastating fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy.

The fire, which broke out on Thursday, September 5, claimed the lives of 21 pupils out of the 156 who were in the dormitory that night.

Details indicate that the fire started around 11 pm and quickly engulfed the dormitory, which housed more than 150 students.

Despite the efforts of residents and firefighters, many children remain missing, leaving the community in a state of anguish.

Since the tragic incident, parents have been gathering outside the school, anxiously awaiting their children’s news.
