The Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja on Thursday took the oath of office at the Supreme Court buildings.

This now marks the beginning of his tenure as the fifth IG of police under the 2010 Constitution.

He takes over Japhet Koome who resigned in July after a wave of protests by Gen Z over the Finance Act 2024.

Kanja was joined by his family during the swearing ceremony that was presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

He was sworn in hours after President William Ruto appointed him to the position.

This follows approval by the National Assembly on Wednesday. He had earlier on been approved by the Senate after vetting.

“I William Ruto appoint Douglas Kanja Kirocho to be the Inspector General of the National Police Service for a term of 4 years,” a gazette notice seen by the Star reads.

Kanja is the immediate former Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police.
