Elderly Couple Burnt To Death In Suspected Arson Attack
The victims, Joseph Onunga, aged 70, and his wife, Judith Mucha, aged 55, were burnt beyond recognition when their house caught fire at around 2.30 am. The two were asleep at the time of the incident.
According to Kawino Sub-location Assistant Chief Erick Opere, the fire was already intense when locals noticed it.
Residents rushed to the scene to save the couple and salvage what they could. However, despite their best efforts, the house was already extensively damaged.
“The fire had already consumed most of the house before anyone could respond. People tried to help, but by the time they got there, it was too late to save the house or the couple inside,” Opere said.
It is believed the couple struggled to escape; they were in deep sleep when the fire broke out, and their door was locked from the inside, making it difficult to flee.
The area assistant chief noted that foul play is suspected in the incident.
“We suspect this could be an act of arson because some individuals attempted to burn the couple’s house in a similar incident last year,” he said.
The bodies were taken to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital Mortuary in Oyugis as authorities continued their investigation into the incident.
