The Ministry of Labour has announced a 6% increase in the minimum for Kenyan workers.

In a statement on X, Alfred Mutua, the CS for Labour, stated that the announcement is a significant step in the efforts to improve the livelihoods of Kenyan workers.

Mutua said that the government has implemented a 6% increase in the minimum wage across various sectors, effective from November 1, 2024.

Mutua further noted that President Ruto and other stakeholders at State House, Nairobi, witnessed the signing of the gazette notice on the new salaries.

“We have updated the Regulation of Wages for both the General and Agricultural sectors, which will directly benefit workers across the nation.

This adjustment ensures that the wages reflect the current economic environment and provide a better standard of living,” Mutua said on X.

The changes set out in the gazette cover a range of job categories, from unskilled workers to skilled laborers and drivers, ensuring that all employees in the sector receive fair compensation.

For instance, an unskilled employee will earn a minimum monthly wage of KSh 7,997.33, or KSh 335.86 per day.

A stockman or herdsman, who typically handles livestock, will see their wages rise to KSh 9,235.78 monthly, or KSh 391.14 per day.

For semi-skilled positions, such as house servants or cooks, the monthly wage is set at KSh 9,129.41, or KSh 347.63 daily.

Higher skilled roles like farm foremen and farm clerks will earn KSh 14,427.13 per month, translating to KSh 609.66 per day.

Similarly, senior foremen will receive a minimum of KSh 9,339.66 monthly, or KSh 397.13 per day.

Specialized positions such as farm artisans will earn KSh 9,558.66 per month, while tractor drivers will take home KSh 10,136.30 monthly, or KSh 430.52 per day.

Operators of complex machinery like combine harvesters will earn KSh 11,166.62 per month, and lorry or car drivers will see a wage of KSh 11,718.67 per month, or KSh 496.72 per day.

The gazettement of the new salaries comes after a meeting in September between CS Mutua and officials from the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), which was represented by President Gilda Odera and executive director Jacqueline Mugo.

During the meeting, the CS emphasized that Kenya’s economy depends on the growth of the private sector, and the government was working to establish different councils to fast-track workers’ welfare.

Although this is a step in the right direction towards enhancing workers’ welfare, Kenya still does not appear on the list of African countries with the highest minimum wages.
