COG Ahmed Abdullahi Condemns Arrest Of Tana River Governor Godhana

The Council of Governors has condemned the “impulsive” arrest of Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana on Friday night.

In a statement, Chairperson of the COG Ahmed Abdullahi said the circumstances surrounding his arrest occurring at his residence raise significant questions about the legality and appropriateness of the arrest.

“How the Governor was arrested is a flagrant disregard to his rights as enshrined in Article 29 of the Constitution and we strongly condemn such bullying in no uncertain terms,” he said.

Abdullahi said if the DCI required the governor’s presence for questioning, the request should have been communicated through formal channels, ensuring adherence to established protocols.

He pointed out that governors are elected state officers and heads of county governments who are well-known to the public.

Abdullahi stated that the existence of national government structures, such as county commanders’ offices, provides a more appropriate means for summoning governors, preserving the integrity of their roles in governance.

The chairperson reiterated that the Council remains committed to fostering a spirit of cooperation and coordination between the counties and other government agencies, including the security agencies.

“In this regard, we will engage the Ministry of Interior on better collaborative measures to avoid such unfortunate eventualities in the future,” he concluded.

Governor Godhana was arrested alongside Galole MP Hiribae Said Buya regarding the ongoing inter-clan tensions in the region.

The clashes have resulted in the loss of at least 18 lives and the displacement of numerous families.

According to DCI, the two leaders were taken in after failing to respond to earlier requests for an interview on the situation.

Director of Directorate of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin confirmed the two were brought to the headquarters in Nairobi for the grilling sessions.
