DP Gachagua Pleads Not Guilty To All 11 Charges
The charges were read out by Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye on Wednesday.
The development now sets the stage for a full hearing of the case by the Senate plenary.
This follows Gachagua’s impeachment by the National Assembly last week.
In the impeachment motion table by Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Mwengi, Gachagua is accused of at least 11 charges.
The charges include gross violation of the constitution, undermining the President, undermining devolution, irregular acquisition of wealth, publicly attacking a judge, intimidating acting Kemsa CEO, promoting ethnicity, and insubordination to the President among other charges.
The trial is being conducted before the full house of the Senate after it abandoned a process to set up an 11-member committee to investigate the charges.
The Senate has scheduled a two-day marathon to hear and ultimately determine Gachagua’s fate after the National Assembly passed his impeachment motion last week.
Gachagua needs at least 23 senators to survive his ouster.
He would be deemed to have been removed from office if at least 45 of the 67 senators voted to uphold any of the 11 charges against him.
An impeachment would confine Gachagua out of public service for life as he would be considered unfit to hold such office in line with the leadership and integrity law.
