Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has wished the country well as it marks its 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations.

In a statement, Gachagua, who has skipped the event despite reports saying he would attend, also prayed for God’s blessings upon the country.

“Happy Mashujaa Day dear Kenyans. God bless our nation,” he said on X.

The celebrations are being held in Kwale County.

This comes a few days after he was impeached by the National Assembly and impeachment upheld by the Senate.

Senators voted to uphold at least five charges against Gachagua.

They include Ground one of shareholding, Ground four of undermining the Independence of Judges, ground five of the National Cohesion and Integrity Act 4, ground six of crimes under the National Cohesion Act, and ground nine of gross misconduct (Public Attacks to NIS).

The motion of impeachment was tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse in the National Assembly last week.

A total of 281 MPs voted in favor of the ouster motion against 44 who voted to save his young political career from sudden death. One MP abstained from voting.

Before impeachment, Gachagua’s lawyers said he had fallen ill and was admitted to the Karen hospital. They said he was suffering from severe chest pains.

Later on, his doctor said he was stable but needed to be on bed rest for between 48 to 72 hours.

Gachagua is in court fighting for political survival. He wants the courts to overturn the impeachment saying that he was not accorded a fair hearing as he was not present to defend himself.

Following the impeachment, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki was nominated by President William Ruto as his replacement and was approved by the National Assembly, which voted unanimously.

Ruto arrived in Kwale on Sunday morning and was received by Kindiki at the County Commissioner’s residence.

Kindiki was joined by other leaders including Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and Governor Fatuma Achani among other leaders.
