Suspects In NHIF SH5.7m Swindling Claim To Be Charged On Monday

Five people accused of unlawfully obtaining Sh5.7 million from the defunct NHIF by lodging false surgical claims will be charged on Monday next week.

They were to take a plea on Wednesday, but the same was deferred as some of the suspects were not present.

The court heard that one of the suspects had been taken ill, while two others who were traveling from Western were unable to make it to court after their car broke down while in transit to Nairobi.

Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi subsequently deferred the plea to Monday, where they are expected to plead to the charges leveled against them.

According to the charge sheet, Otieno Kennedy Tindi, who is the first accused in the matter, unlawfully obtained Sh5.7 million from NHIF by lodging 35 false surgical claims.

He then proceeded to hire the services of a medical doctor.

From the charge sheet, the medic is an unregistered and unlicensed medical doctor. He has been accused of presenting himself as a fake doctor at a hospital in Eastleigh.

He would allegedly fill out and sign NHIF pre-authorization forms purporting them to be of another licensed doctor. His motive, according to the charge sheet, was to defraud the fund through fake surgical claims.

The offenses are said to have been committed between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2023.

Also facing charges of making false documents are three other suspects. The three are also accused of making false documents.

It is alleged that they made fake NHIF pre-authorization forms, discharge summaries, and invoices, purporting them to be genuine documents for medical services offered to NHIF.
