Wetang’ula Admits Evidence By MP On Alleged Mismanagement At UoN

Parliament has admitted documents tabled by Mukurweini Member of Parliament (MP) John Kaguchia regarding alleged mismanagement at the University of Nairobi.

The documents, according to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula will now form part of the records of the House.

According to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, they will now be used in the probe into the matter.

Speaker Wetang’ula noted that the copies of the documents from various state agencies tabled by Mukurweini MP Kaguchia to substantiate the claims are authentic hence admissible.

“I directed the Clerk to examine the documents and advise on their authenticity and admissibility, and the Clerk has since discharged that responsibility,” Speaker Wetang’ula said.

They are from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Commission for University Education (CUE), the University of Nairobi (UoN), and the Pontifical Urbaniana University.

“I have determined that the documents from the EACC and the CUE as submitted by Mukurweini MP Kaguchia are authentic and admissible,” Speaker Wetang’ula stated.

The Mukurweini Member of Parliament raised the issue last week on the floor of the House making claims on management and operational issues at the varsity.

Kaguchia had raised concerns about the university’s operations, including the removal of Vice-Chancellor Stephen Kiama and the transfer of key officials.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos appeared to respond to questions asked by members.

However, Speaker Wetang’ula had initially suspended the debate due to the lack of supporting evidence.

The Mukurweini Member of Parliament also questioned the existence of many unoccupied positions in management where the positions of Finance Officer, Procurement Manager, Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Security Officer, Finance Officer, Procurement Manager, Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Security Officer were all vacant.

By admitting MP Kaguchia’s evidence the Education Cabinet Secretary is now expected to present a response to the House on the allegations against the University.
