Odede Was Human Rights Champion Confirms Ipoa
Odede died on Friday, January 3 after a short illness.
The KNCHR boss was an ex-officio member of the IPOA Board.
“It is with profound sadness that we, the Board and staff of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, mourn the untimely passing of Commissioner Roseline Odhiambo Odede, HSC,” Ipoa said.
Ipoa said that the death of Commissioner Odede is a great loss to the nation.
“At Ipoa, we had the honor of working alongside Commissioner Odede and witnessing her unwavering commitment to human rights and justice,” Ipoa said.
“Her vast expertise and passionate dedication to promoting accountability in policing were instrumental in advancing the cause of justice and fairness.”
Ipoa said that Odede’s legacy of selfless service and steadfast belief in the dignity and rights of all Kenyans will continue to inspire.
The Authority condoled her family, loved ones, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the Law Society of Kenya, and Kenyans adding that she served with exceptional dedication.
“May her memory remain a beacon of hope and her impact on our nation’s human rights landscape never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who mourn this irreplaceable loss. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
Odede was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Certified Mediator, Arbitrator, and Social and Environmental Impact Auditor and Assessor.
She previously served as the Vice Chairperson of the Judges Magistrates and Vetting Board and was a nationally recognized expert in gender, governance, policy, and human rights.
She holds a Master of Laws Degree awarded by the University of Witwatersrand Johannesburg, South Africa; and has been a litigator in private practice for over 30 years, during which period she offered pro-bono services in the area of Human Rights, a role for which she has been awarded the Head of State Commendation.
Odede was also specially recognized by the East Africa Law Society, a regional organization, for distinguished legal practice and service.
She has held several leadership positions in several professional societies, including the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, East Africa Law Society, Law Society of Kenya, and FIDA Kenya.
