SHA Disburses Sh7.3bn In Claims To Facilities
The Social Health Authority (SHA) has reported an upward trend in claims disbursements.
Since its rollout, the Authority has disbursed a total of Sh7.3 billion, comprising Sh1.3 billion under the Primary Health Care Fund and Ksh 6 billion for Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) claims.
The most recent disbursement of Sh1.12 billion was made on December 23, 2024, bringing the total number of facilities paid to 5,000.
The Authority urged healthcare providers and facilities that have provided services to SHA beneficiaries and are yet to receive payments to contact them for support through claimsmanagement@sha.go.ke.
In December 2024, Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management CS Justin Muturi directed Huduma Centres across the country to set up SHIF desks.
The CS said that the move will help end confusion around the Social Health Insurance Fund and Social Health Authority.
According to the CS, the SHIF desks in Huduma Centres will enable an easy point of access to information.
“I recognize that there has been confusion around SHIF and the Social Health Authority (SHA). To bridge this gap, I have directed that all Huduma Centres across the country establish SHIF desks, ensuring every Kenyan can easily access information and register for this transformative program,” Muturi said in a statement on X.
SHA is the authority mandated to manage the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) in a significant policy shift that intends to provide health insurance coverage to over 50 million Kenyans up from the 10 million that were under NHIF.
The shift is a step toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and all Kenyan citizens and their dependents must register as SHA members to reap the benefits of SHIF.
The transition was greeted with skepticism, confusion, and system failure with patients claiming they were being asked to pay out of pocket, but the government said the teething problems have since been resolved and SHIF is now working seamlessly.
The Ministry of Health has continued to encourage Kenyans to register with SHA in an ongoing exercise that’s being spearheaded by Community Health Promoters at the county and ward level.
