EACC Arrests Two Imposters Posing as Directors and Defrauding Public in Bungoma
EACC stated that the third-year student was posing as the Director in charge of the EACC Kakamega Office. Notably, such an office does not exist as the Commission’s regional office for the Western region is based in Bungoma.
On the other hand, his female accomplice was posing as a senior EACC Director based in Nairobi. The lady claimed to have graduated from Kibabii University in 2024.
Detailing the events of their arrest, EACC said that the two were apprehended while conducting a ‘raid’ investigating National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) projects.
“The two suspects were apprehended in an NG-CDF office, which they had raided, claiming to be on official duty to investigate NG-CDF projects,” EACC stated.
“They demanded a bribe of Ksh150,000 from the complainants, promising to drop the investigation and “forgive” them. The complainants notified the EACC, which mounted an operation leading to the suspects’ arrest,” the anti-corruption watchdog added.
The two suspects are currently being held at the EACC Western Regional offices in Bungoma, where they are recording statements.
The EACC invited victims of the activities of the two individuals to get in touch with the Commission as they conduct investigations.
“Meanwhile, any person who may have been defrauded by the arrested suspects may contact the Commission or visit its offices at Integrity Centre or the nearest regional office,” it stated.
Further, the graft investigation body raised alarm over the increased cases of suspects impersonating its officials as they defraud Kenyans.
“Noting the numerous incidents where individuals have lost substantial sums of money to fraudsters impersonating EACC officials, the Commission calls upon members of the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such schemes,” EACC asserted.
