Elon Musk Reacts to Uhuru’s Remarks Over Trump’s US Aid Freez

Uhuru, on Wednesday, laughed off the crying from various people questioning what Kenya and other African countries will do without US aid. The retired president wondered why they were complaining, saying Trump has no reason to continue funding global programmes.

“Why are you crying? It’s not your government; it’s not your country. You don’t pay taxes in America,” he asked.

He added, “Whether we like it or not, funding for these (pandemics) has to come from ourselves because we have to begin to re-prioritize what is important for us as Africans on the continent.”

In a rejoinder to Uhuru, the South African tech billionaire said, “Good for him.” In his tweet on Friday, Musk retweeted a viral video of Uhuru’s remarks with a three-word response.

Musk has been hugely involved in the reelection of Trump and has assumed a significant advisory role, focusing on enhancing government efficiency.

While it is not official yet, Trump had indicated that Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy would co-lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

On January 24, 2025, Trump ordered a 90-day suspension of nearly all US foreign aid, excluding assistance to Israel and Egypt, pending a comprehensive review.

This abrupt halt has disrupted various international programmes resulting in a panic in the country, with the government forced to clarify programmes like the giving of ARVs.

While reacting to the halt, Uhuru posed, “We should ask ourselves since the funding has been suspended what we should do to bridge the gap. What are we going to do to support ourselves?”

While speaking at the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit 2025 in Mombasa, Uhuru said the freeze on funding is a wake-up for leaders to come up with a way to help Kenyans without the aid.

“As Africans, we should not wait for others to come to our rescue. Our excitement when we watched CNN, and BBC celebrate new vaccines being rolled out, but none was coming to us. For any future pandemic, don’t think they’ll prioritize us, they give you the surplus, at times for free since they have sorted themselves first.”
