The former Chief Justice, while taking a swipe at the Kenya Kwanza government, noted that abductions and extrajudicial killings were a profound betrayal of the country’s future and the sanctity of the Constitution.
“A leadership that abets a culture of killings and human rights violations jeopardizes its legitimacy. We cannot be lulled into complacency in the face of such assaults on our shared humanity,” Maraga stated.
Expressing his support for the Kenyan youth, Maraga revealed that every Kenyan, particularly the youth, deserved to live in safety and security for them to pursue their dreams.
Maraga went ahead to call for the immediate release of all youthful Kenyans who are still being held incommunicado despite the government’s denial of the same.
Maraga also expressed his empathy in the gruesome killing of two Mlolongo men, Martin Mwau and Justus Musyimi, whose bodies were found at the Nairobi city mortuary after six weeks of heightened search.
The former CJ, who commented on the matter, urged security agencies to speed up their investigations and bring to book the suspects behind the duo’s killing.
“I call for accountability and justice for the victims and their loved ones. Let us work together to build a society that upholds the rule of law, constitutionalism, and integrity,” Maraga stated.
Maraga’s sentiments followed hours after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula called on security agencies to hasten investigations into the alarming rise in kidnappings and unexplained deaths across the country.
Speaking in Kisero Constituency, Kakamega County, on Friday, January 31, Wetangula expressed worry over the growing trend of individuals being abducted and later found dead.
“I urge the Inspector General of Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and all internal security agencies to thoroughly investigate and uncover those behind these kidnappings and killings,” Wetnagula commented.
“The police say they are not the ones doing it. We want them to investigate and tell Kenyans who are these criminal elements in our midst, who are unlawfully arresting people, causing their disappearance, and eventually, they are found dead,” he added.
